My Son's Love Affair with Ellie

My 17 year-old, FunnyMan is madly in love with this singer-songwriter from the UK. Knowing how much I enjoy this style of music, he talked me into giving her a go. This is one of my favorites... I love the message, "How wonderful life is, now that you're in the world." I hope you enjoy too!

My Piano Solo: Fantasia

This is the piece I performed for my student recital. I wish I would have thought to have someone take a video of that performance as the sound was so much better on that $100k Steinway 9 ft grand piano.

This recording is on my home piano and from my cell phone. The piece is "Fantasia" written by Jeanine Yeager. I love this piece and for some reason it reminds me of Water, both in it's calming and destructive stages. I added clips to the music to illustrate how the music affects me. :)

Like a Pencil in a Crayon Box

The other day I had some errands to run and since LittleDuckling's birthday is coming up I decided to take him to lunch and then let him pick out a birthday present. Well, FunnyMan was home too, so it was just the boys and me. On the way over FunnyMan says something about a song which I happened to know, which then spurred a conversation about another "song"... The Double Dutch Bus.

So, I did what any other seemingly normal person would do. I broke out into song. Okay, well, not "normal", but I broke out into song nevertheless. We were in transit to the restaurant and the boys just laughed at me and rolled their eyes. But, I choose to believe that at least one of them was secretly impressed that I knew all of the words. Haha!

They really had a hay-day when I found the video on YouTube (from my phone) and plugged it in to the surround sound. This little gem is just so special I couldn't resist.

At the restaurant, I was having some fun with them. LittleDuckling made use of some air quotes and commented that I seemed a little too "happy" -- again. I smiled. It's true I am. He told me that I need to "keep it down" before people start looking at me. Haha. I replied with "well, at least I didn't 'Raise the Roof' (complete with the raising arms with open palm to ceiling motion... yes, I did)." Again, he was a little embarrassed. Me? Oh, I didn't care. I just laughed. Then, he says THIS:

Mom -- You're like a mechanical pencil trying to fit into a box of crayons.

Bwahahahahahahaha! What I've got here folks is one clever, witty kid. Man, I know I'm a little "out there". But I am learning to love me. Ain't no shame... hehehe.

Anyway -- for your viewing pleasure, The Double Dutch Bus! Take it away, Frankie!

Cuckoo 9-1-1?

Call #1 - Naked man calls 9-1-1 because he is "stuck" in a hotel hot tub and he "needs a hug and warm cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows." For real... check it out here!

But that's not all -- check this one out too!

Call #2 - This lady called 9-1-1 not once, but FIVE times. All because she was having a hard time finding a DATE! hahaha!

Call #3 - This woman not only wanted a DATE but a HUSBAND!!!

Lesson to be learned here is if you're going to be drinking, don't call 9-1-1!

Call #4 - And lastly, this woman wasn't "feeling well" and freaked out after locking herself IN her car. Yeah... some people are just that smooth! Enjoy!

Talking Tom

So, I found this app on my phone... "Talking Tom". You talk to the cat and he/she repeats you. Quite funny... Here are the "Talking Tom" clips I have made so far! Enjoy!

Tuesday Tunage: Sunshine Song

You know I love him...so I gotta share. Love this song; music & lyrics. Freakin Awesome Message!!! Sometimes we need to borrow a li'l sunshine from someone else, and then, when we are back on our feet and have enough to give, we need to share it, spread the sunshine on. Totally "melty". Totally makes me wish I was at the concert this year.

Well sometimes the sun shines on
Other people's houses and not mine.
Some days the clouds paint the sky all gray
And it takes away my summertime.
Somehow the sun keeps shining upon you,

While I struggle to get mine.
If there's a light in everybody,
Send out your ray of sunshine.

I want to walk the same roads as everybody else,
Through the trees and past the gates.
Getting high on heavenly breezes,
Making new friends along the way.
I won't ask much of nobody,
I'm just here to sing along.
And make my mistakes looks gracious,
And learn some lessons from my wrongs.

Well sometimes the sun shines on
Other people's houses and not mine.
Some days the clouds paint the sky all gray
And it takes away my summertime.
Somehow the sun keeps shining upon you,
While I struggle to get mine.
A little light never hurt nobody,
Send out your ray of sunshine.

Oh, if this little light of mine
Combined with yours today,
How many watts could we luminate?
How many villages could we save?
And my umbrella's tired of the weather,
Wearing me down.
Well, look at me now.

You should look as good as your outlook,
Would you mind if I took some time,
to soak up your light, your beautiful light?
You've got a paradise inside.
I get hungry for love and thirsty for life,
And much too full on the pain,
When I look to the sky to help me
And sometimes it looks like rain.

As the sun shines on other people's houses
And not mine,
And the sky paints those clouds in a way
That it takes away the summertime,
Somehow the sun keeps shining upon you,
while I kindly stand by.
If theres a light in everybody,
Send out your ray of sunshine

You're undeniably warm, you're cerulean,
You're perfect in desire.
Won't you hang around
so the sun, it can shine on me,
And the clouds they can roll away,
And the sky can become a possibility?
If there's a light in everybody,
Send out your ray of sunshine.

Sunday Sentiments: The Condition of Your Heart

According to Discovery Health, the average size a woman's heart is about 9 oz and a man's is 10.5 oz. Considering the weight, that isn't very big... not really. And yet from such a small organ we can experience such a great magnitude of emotion. It's a phenomenon, really.

However, what fascinates me about the heart is more than its physical condition. Something I've discussed before {{HERE}}, {{HERE}}, and finally {{HERE}} is that the heart can produce a physiological response as well.

When we act in Love, we can physically feel our heart swell and move to the front of our chest cavity. When we are surrounded by hurt or pain or deep, dark sadness or sorrow, we can feel our heart retract, become small and move to the back of our chest wall. Many may say it's a psychosomatic response. Which is to say it's the reaction of the mind that creates a physical condition change of the heart. Possibly. But I still say it's phenomenal.

If you have been following my blog for any extended amount of time, you will know that I have been through some experiences that, as John Mayer sings, "have offended my faith [in love] and my trust, Until all is lost..." A BIG part of my journey has been to realize the beauty of love in its completeness and in its fullness.

Often times we may hear or have even said the phrases, "You have a good heart" or "You have a big heart" and even, "You have a kind heart". This is something I truly strive for.

Although loving completely takes effort, I believe it is worth it.

On this journey to love, and to love completely and to be loved completely, it is imperative that we become aware of the condition of our heart.

Because of the conscientious effort to change the condition of my heart, I am actually learning that I am able to forgive more easily, heal from heartache more quickly, and give of my love more freely. It's empowering, actually.

Y'know the sentiment "Misery loves company"? Well, I believe, the same is true with love. Love loves company. Love attracts more love.

A friend commented just a few nights ago, "Boy, people sure do seem to love you." That sort of struck me funny. Especially, because there have been moments in my life, including earlier this year, I started to wonder if my personality made me unlovable.

Needless to say, his comment has been on my mind the last two nights since he said it. Today I thought, perhaps maybe they do love me. Maybe I am more lovable than I thought. Then again, perhaps it has more to do with the fact that I give love more freely now than I used to too.

You gotta give love to get love.

In improving the condition of my heart, I have learned this about love in general:

"I'm grateful that God allows trials and tragedies to occur in our lives. Not because they're easy or because they're desired, but because they help us love." - Chris Williams

If any of you from here remember the story of Chris Williams, who lives down at the south end of the Valley, you'll remember the tragedy he suffered a couple of years ago. It was all over the news for what seemed like months. I am continually amazed how, in spite of all sorts of tragedies occurring in our nation every day, there are still people like Chris.

If you have about 8 1/2 minutes, I highly recommend you watch this video about Chris's situation and how he was able to find love in the face of tragedy and how it has helped the condition of his heart to heal from that same tragedy.

Happy Sunday!

Barleyjuice: What's Up Yours?

I love this group. I think they are musical geniuses to mix Irish/Celtic and a little rock. My dad always listened to Celtic Music, so this satisfies my yearning for that. This is one of my fav songs cuz mostly it's totally funny and semi-inappropriate. But you gotta admit -- most of us wonder... "What's Up Yours?"

An ode to the Kilt! Enjoy!

What's Up Yours?
(K. Brewer / K. Swanson / K.M. Brewer / G. Ford / trad.)

you hear the rumblings at the fest
rowdy boys in ancient dress
but nae a one will near confess
what lurks beneath the tartan

you see the swagger and the sway
imagination runs away
could there be cloth or is there nay
behind the pleated curtain

finnich inarra finnich aneeah
finnich a feileadh mor
a trophy or two and a ribbon of blue
what's up yours?

when Irish eyes are smiling
what do you think they're smiling for?
it's a nod and a wink to me lucky charms
what's up yours?

we stand here proud before the king
we love to pipe, we love to sing
perhaps I'll do the highland fling
to show you my affection

ye lasses with your scarlet sash
i'll give your necks a good whiplash
if you should turn and catch me crack
a smile in your direction

finnich inara finnich aneeah
finnich a feileadh mor
could be the loch ness monster
what's up yours?
you can give the lass her fairin
but the gems she will adore
are the ones she'll see above your knee
what's up yours?

(instrumental shenanigans)

finnich inara finnich aneeah
finnich a feileadh mor
a thunderous crack and a union jack
what's up yours?
when irish eyes are smilin'
what d'you think they're smilin' for?
it's a nod & a wink to me lucky charms
what's up yours?

finnich inara finnich aneeah
finnich a feileadh mor
a trophy or two and a ribbon o' blue
what's up yours?
you can give the lass her fairin
but the gems she will adore
are the ones she'll see above your knee
what's up yours?

finnich inara finnich aneeah
finnich a feileadh mor
a thunderous crack and a union jack
what's up yours?

call it the lion rampant
call it dragon lore
willy wallace called it freedom!
what's up yours?

Thursday Live: "Haven't Met You Yet"

Okay... I admit. Sometimes when the rest of the world goes nuts over something, I tend to drag my feet a little. I guess I'd rather be a shepherd than a sheep. I mean, I still have yet to pick up a Twilight book. I heard all the rage about Michael Bublé about a year ago and brushed it off. Then I heard this song. Finally, I listened to the lyrics one day in the car, and tho a "happy, hope-filled song", I cried. I decided I needed it for the ol' iPod. The thing I love about Canadian-born Bublé, is that he is "self-made". He wanted to sing like Bing Crosby since he was little and as he grew, working as a salmon fisherman with his father, he saved his own money and financed his own first jazz album. He was discovered while singing for a private birthday party, and then hired for little singing roles here and there in movies. Okay, enough of the bio. Let's not forget that in spite of his quirky "white-boy" dance moves, he is rather dreamy to look at. Yeah... I could kiss those lips... hmmm.... melty.

The official music video if off limits for (legal) blog posting, but here is his live performance of the song I love most on Oprah. Lyrics are posted below...enjoy!

I'm not surprised.
Not everything lasts.
I've broken my heart so many times I stopped keeping track.
I talk myself in.
I talk myself out.
I get all worked up, then I let myself down.

I tried so very hard not to lose it.
I came up with a million excuses.
I thought I thought of every possibility.

And I know someday that it'll all turn out.
You'll make me work so we can work to work it out.
And I promise you, kid, that I'll give so much more than I get.
I just haven't met you yet.

Mmmm...

I might have to wait.
I'll never give up.
I guess it's half timing,
And the other half's luck.
Wherever you are.
Whenever it's right.
You'll come out of nowhere and into my life.

And I know that we can be so amazing.
And baby your love is gonna change me.
And now I can see every possibility.

Mmmm...

But someday I know that it'll all turn out.
And you'll make me work so we can work to work it out.
And I promise you, kid, that I'll give so much more than I get.
I just haven't met you yet.

They say all's fair -
In love and war.
But I won't need to fight it.
We'll get it right and,
We'll be united.

And I know that we can be so amazing.
And being in your life is gonna change me.
And now I can see every single possibility, mmmm.

And someday I know it'll all turn out.
And I'll work to work it out.
Promise you, kid, I'll give more than I get,
Than I get, than I get, than I get.

Ohhh!

You know it'll all turn out.
And you'll make me work so we can work to work it out.
And I promise you, kid, that I'll give so much more than I get.
I just haven't met you yet.

I just haven't met you yet.

English 2010 Project: Ad Campaign

Overview: Basically, each group has to submit a HUGE portfolio of a plethora of writing for a particular campaign on a topic affecting the community, state, nation or world. The group has to decide which "side" of the campaign they are pushing for, and then the work begins. The hard part is, even if you don't agree with the group, if you're outvoted, you still have to go with the group and campaign for that side of an issue. Our group must be full of a bunch of passive-aggressive wimps (like me), because we chose one of the least controversial topics in comparison to "hot button" topics like health care reform, immigration reform, legalized marijuana, pro-life/pro-choice, etc. We started off with education and finally honed it down to class sizes. Our group decided that we are "campaigning" for smaller class sizes.

Assignment: Each member of the group must then submit 4 pieces of writing, in 4 different genres, all in sync with our campaign. So, each week we submit another one, do peer reviews and then NEXT week, I (the group leader) get to submit the entire campaign portfolio.

So far, for this campaign, I have written a Report, A Proposal, A Letter to the Editor, and finally, A Television Ad Campaign. My oldest son did the voice-overs for me. He has this cool software that can alter his voice to sound higher or lower. So instead of sounding like a 16 year old with a sweet tenor voice, he can sound like a much deeper-voiced man.

So, here's my pat-myself-on-my-own-back moment... enjoy!

Sunday Sentiments: "On My Way to Seminary"

My son wrote, directed, acted in, edited and produced this short film for his Seminary class. Aside of the message he wants to give to other kids his age, the cool thing is he is the only one playing both parts... and used split screen techniques. How cool is he?
(double click for larger view in separate screen.)

He created "Get Popcorn Productions" back when he was still in elementary school. Yes... I am a proud mama.

Tuesday Tunage - "Somewhere Only We Know"

I freakin love this song. I listen to it at least once a day...

I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete

Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute, why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go somewhere only we know?
Somewhere only we know

Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute, why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go? So why don't we go?

Oh, this could be the end of everything
So why don't we go somewhere only we know?
Somewhere only we know
Somewhere only we know

Don't Be A Debbie Downer!

So, I realize I've been sort of a Debbie Downer lately... Gonna try to be my "glass is half-full" self again. Speaking of Debbie Downer... This is my FAVORITE clip of Debbie Downer from SNL... Ben Affleck pretty much loses it. Check it out!

Do YOU know any Debbie Downers in your life???

Tuesday Tunage: Realize

Well, although I am not "madly -in-love" with this particular artist, she is one of my musical Besties. She just...gets me, y'know? Anyway, this song resonates with me... hope you enjoy!

Tuesday Tunage: These Are The Days

Jamie Cullum is such a freakin awesome piano player... I can sight read pretty dang good, but this is genius! I love this song.. reminds me of a friend I shared some special moments with once... I still love him :)

These are the days that I've been missing,
Give me the taste, give me the joy of summer wine.

These are the days that bring new meaning,
I feel the stillness of the sun and I feel fine.

Sometimes when the nights are closing early,
I remember you and I start to smile.

Even though now you don't want to know me,
I get on by, and I go the extra mile.

These are the times of love and meaning,
Ice of the heart melted away, and found the light.

These are the days of endless dreaming,
Troubles of life are floatin' away like a bird in flight.

These are the days
These are the days
These are the days

I thought you said our love would last for ever
Believing that the tears would end for good.

I told you that we'd get through any weather
Maybe that didn't work out, but we did the best we could.

These are the days that I've been missing
Give me the taste, give me the joy of summer wine.

These are the days that bring new meaning,
I feel the stillness of the sun...and I feel fine.
