As many of my friends are still having babies, I often see the "What shall we name the baby?" question circulating social media. Of course, there seems to be that standard set of unwritten rules parents check off the list while sounding out candidates.
Does it rhyme with a naughty word or a body part? Do the initials spell something unfavorable? Does the name carry a negative connotation (an infamous terrorist, say)? Do the names together create another set of words? (Ben Dover.) Is the name so unique or hard to pronounce phonetically, that others will always be getting it wrong? If yes to any of these questions, then a parent must consider the long-term effects the child's name will have on him or her.
In the past 20ish years, I've noticed this trend of bringing back old-fashioned names. Sometimes the media plays a part in this. Growing up with the name Emma, I can tell you that no one in any of the five schools I attended as a child ever had that same name. Emily was popular, sure. But not Emma. In fact, I often heard things like, "Emma? My grandmother's name is Emma." Once I even heard, "Oh fun. That's our dog's name!" What a compliment, right?
But then something happened. In 1990 the hit family comedy "Kindergarten Cop", featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger, came out. In it, an adorable five-year-old Sarah Rose Karr plays a precocious character named, "Emma". You can check her cuteness out here:
Another of my favorite lines is when Schwarzenegger and his partner are teaching them NOT to talk to strangers. Little Emma blurts out, "What about kids? Can we talk to kids?" They respond, "Yeah. You can talk to kids, that's all right." To which she questions, "What about dogs...Can we talk to dogs?" Hilarious. I tell you.
Anyway, my point is, shortly after the weekend opener of that show, I'm hearing about all of these families naming their new baby girls Emma. It was weird. I was like, "No. Don't do that. They won't like having such an odd-ball name." But just like that, Emma became an instant popular name, an old-fashioned name made hip again.
We saw the same thing happen with names such as Isabella/Isabelle, Olivia, Mary (thanks to Mary-Kate), and Jasmine (thanks to Aladdin). Old-fashioned boys' names were also making a comeback. Names like George and Harry, thanks to the princes by the same names, and now we have Henry and Hank too. Biblical names have resurfaced and we now have lots of Isaacs and Noahs, among others.
I'm still waiting for what I call the "Frozen effect". How many baby girls have been or will be named Elsa, because of that movie?
When I first heard some of the name choices these new parents picked, I cringed and thought, "What were they thinking?" Now I think it's pretty cool.
My friend, Legend, once told me he believes that a person can make the name, and it doesn't always have to be the other way around. I've considered that several times since and whole-heartedly agree. The name Sherwin doesn't HAVE to mean the boy will grow up to be a wimp.
We each have the power to change what our name means to others. Case in point: While Alice might make some think "old maid from the Brady Bunch", it makes others think, "young, beautiful girl from Alice in Wonderland." So, it's up to the girl to own her name.
After all three of my children were born, I began to really get into my family history. I came upon lots of names I loved and I wished I had stumbled upon them sooner. I would have definitely figured out a way to incorporate some of these family names into the naming of my children.
Names such as Eli, Christian, Magdelena, Anna, Susanna, Jesse, Elizabeth, Hannah, Sarah Jane, Phebe, Hans, and so on. I, myself, was named after a great aunt & great uncle (my middle name is a derivative of his), and whenever someone asks if I was named after anyone, I answer that with pride. Knowing that I have a family name makes me feel part of something... special, something bigger.
My cousin named her son Leo, after an uncle. At first I thought, "Wow. That's brave, but also cool." And he's owned it. He is a cool kid and has made that a cool name. Of course Leo DiCaprio has a healthy influence on the coolness factor too, I'm sure. But, I'm proud of the fact my cousin gave her son that name. I only wish I had thought of it first.
My children were not named after anyone. My boys were given their names because, honestly, those were the only names their father and I could agree on. My daughter was given a name I made up, and her middle name is the same as a Italian city, because I love it. I truly love my children's names and I cannot imagine them with any other name. They pretty much rock their names and definitely "own" them. But I still wish I would have found a way to incorporate a family name in there somewhere. Somehow it feels like I would have been passing down more of a legacy to them.
So, now whenever I see the "What shall we name the baby?" post, I almost always respond with, "A name of one of your ancestors."

My Ant Loves Me, by Dougan
My Ant Emma loves me. My ant is nice to me. I know that she loves me because she plays games with me and sings to me. We play games and sing songs together. I think that she is the best ant to have.
Best paper EVER! Am I right? Oh yeah... and "Ant" Emma... //snickers//.

I Have Blurtitis
blur·ti·tis [bluhr-tahy-tis]
noun Pathology.
1. Inflammation of sudden or inadvertent dialogue; the disorder of divulging impulsively or unadvisedly.
noun
2. The act of blurting out
3. The state of blurting out.
Unlike Tourette Syndrome, Blurtitis isn't a sudden onset of tics; rather it's when one blurts out their own thoughts, feelings or opinions. There are many who tend to have a case of "Aggressive" or "Abrasive" Blurtitis. Luckily, I don't fall into that category. I am fairly passive and don't always feel the need to "tell it like it is" to prove a point or to call others "out", or anything like that. No, that's not me at all. I avoid confrontation like it's the Plague.
I tend to blurt out the questions pressing on my mind, or the thoughts that I've been mulling over for some time already. I have many curiosities and tend to just ask, even if it hasn't been on my mind. If something seems amiss, I process it in my mind first, from beginning to end (sometimes a 2-second process), and then usually blurt out my questions or thoughts. I'm not really sure if the guys I've dated find this refreshing, a bit intimidating, or a little of both, but I can tell by their expressions or long, awkward pauses that I have caught some of them by surprise before.
Oh well... maybe one day I'll find a cure. Haha.

Not.Even.Kidding. I'm pretty sure I have this. Don't worry though, I don't think it's something you can catch. It seems to be something you're either born with or you're not. And while some patients have early onset of the disorder and are later able to overcome it, others - like me - carry it with them in their adult years too. And in even a smaller percent (again, like me) the condition seems to worsen over time.

5 Random Things
The Challenge: Post 5 random facts about you that most people do not already know.
This was hard for me because I am such an open book - especially here on the blog. And what I haven't shared here is, for the most part, stuff I consider too personal, even for me.
Here is what I came up with:
2) If presented the choice between chocolate and cheese, I choose cheese. Every time.
3) I still have all 4 of my Wisdom Teeth, and I can never have them removed either.
4) When I was a kid, I'd go "exploring". I used to catch frogs, worms, and all sorts of things. I found a few injured birds and had no qualms about picking them up. I remember once "finding" a bunch of baby mice. I held them in my hand too and carried them around all day long. I don't know when it happened, but things gross me out soooo easily now. I have a weak stomach and the mere thought of holding any type of rodents, reptiles, or birds with lice [probably] makes me want to throw up in my mouth.
5) I don't ALWAYS kiss on the first date. Just sayin'...

Emma & Em -- Who Knew?
Growing up I knew no other Emmas, except my great aunt, for whom I was named. Emma simply wasn't popular. My parents had very old-fashioned and/or scriptural names for all 7 of us. While all of the other kids at school were Jenny, Amy, Angela, Jason, Julie, Matthew, and Megan, we were Naomi, Emma, Rachel, Samuel, Sarah, Enos and Ruth. We were born between the 70's and 80's. And it's true -- we didn't have "popular" names. {{Top Names of the 70's}} {{Top Names of the 80's}} (Well, Rachel and Sarah were more common than the rest of ours at that time.)
As a side note, do you know that Baby Name Books get their entries from scouring the Social Security Name data base? I gave my daughter an original "made up" name and every year after she was born I googled it to see how quickly it would appear on a baby name list. It took 2 years. And now if I google it, I find people's blogs with their baby's pics and lo and behold -- that baby shares the same name as mine! Who knew?
Anyhoo--- So, my name was very uncommon for my generation. Maybe I wouldn't have felt like I stuck out, if we weren't the family that stuck out in our town. I mean, you have to realize that my mom had a new baby on average every 14 months. That's 7 kids in an 8 1/2 year time span. Additionally, for many of those years my parents owned this full-size red van with a hand-glider airbrushed on the side along with the iridescent words "West Winds" next to it. Everyone knew our van. Just picture this large family with quirky or unusual names gallivanting around town in this hippie-mobile. Could we be any more conspicuous? I think not.
Whenever older people would ask my name and I'd tell them, I often heard, "That was my mother's name" or "...my grandmother's name" in return. Once a German exchange student said that her dog back home was named Emma. Suffice it to say, I guess I always felt like I sort of stood out a little, when all I really ever wanted to do was blend in.
While there were at least a dozen Emilys at any of the schools I attended, I was always the only Emma. Something I noticed quickly was that many friends to the Emilys often referred to them as "Em". But I-- I was always just Emma. Just Emma.
The first time someone addressed me as "Em" was in college. It sort of caught me off guard and I wasn't sure that I even liked it. I never said anything to the person because she was such a close friend, and I knew that it somehow signified our close relationship.
When I was a newlywed and newly pregnant, there was a couples night at some friends of ours on campus. It was a small church university, so our church friends were also our school friends. Every Monday night we would rotate apartments and do things like share an inspirational message, play a few games, read from the scriptures and eat! It was on one of these Monday nights one of the other couples was asking us if we had any baby names picked out yet -- which we hadn't. Someone half-jokingly suggested if it's a girl to name her after me. Come to find out - in front of everyone at that very moment, mind you - that my spouse did not "care for" my name. So, here I already felt like I stood out - and now I felt even worse because I felt like my husband hated my name. I was young and naive, and yes, I took it personally.
But here's a funny thing that happened. About 18 months before that, the movie, Kindergarten Cop was released. One of the little girls in the kindergarten class was named Emma. I had watched the movie during my senior year of high school and was quite surprised that a new movie would show a little girl with such an "old fashioned" name, and she was adorable too!
Anyway - it wasn't long after that movie that people started naming their baby girls Emma. It was sort of weird to me at first. I figured it was just a phase. By 1995 though, Emma was in the top 50 names and by 2000 it had reached the top 10. And then from 2003 - 2010 it has remained in the top 3. It is soooo odd to me that a name I did not like growing up, so many other people seemed to like. A few years ago, when I was with Big-D, he made the comment that he really liked my name. That shocked me and intrigued me too. He said the name "fit" me; that it seemed to resemble something pure and simple, yet unique and beautiful. After that, I began to see my name differently. I wanted to be a simple and pure, yet unique and beautiful person. I wanted to live up to my name all of a sudden.
The neighborhood I live in now is the longest place I've ever lived in my adult life - going on 8 1/2 years. As I have gotten to know a few people, they have called me "Em". Again, I didn't really like it at first. I sort of felt like, "What gives you the right to call me Em when I've introduced myself as Emma? If I had wanted to be called Em, I would have said my name is Em!" But again, I never really said anything, because I knew the intention was harmless, and they were just trying to be friendly.
It's only been in the past 2-3 years that I have really come to love my name. I understand its meaning and origin and for whom I was named much better now. And I kind of like being the only 30-something I know with that name. I guess as I went through my divorce and the whole, "re-discovering Emma" process, I have also come to learn that I like me and that if being me means I "stand out" sometimes -- so what? I'd rather stand out than blend in because it means I am being myself.
As far as "Em" goes, it has definitely started growing on me the past year. I don't mind it at all when close friends call me that. And I actually like it when men of "interest" call me that (hehe). Other than that though, when someone addresses me as Em, the voice in my head starts bobbin' at the neck, smarting off, "Oh no you di-unt; you don't knowwwww me." Hahaha.
And now, for your viewing pleasure, "Emma", from Kindergarten Cop!

That's What She Said - and Other Thoughts from Last Night
"It's easier to get off if my back is a little lower to the ground."
"Usually, I have the right protection, but I forgot this time. Don't worry though, I'll be careful...I have lots of experience."
"Okay, just put your hands where you feel comfortable and let me know when you're ready."
"We'll take it slow, and if at any time I am going too fast and you wanna slow down, just let me know."
"Do you want to go any further?... I mean, we've come this far -- might as well go all the way, right?"
"Let's see if I can get this in just the right spot."
"What can I say... I'm just average."

We were 4-Wheeling in the mountains folks! Geesh! Get your minds outta the gutter! hahaha!
Had a great time with a new friend and had the best conversations, which I already alluded to in Friday's post. The funniest, however was the plethora of "that's what she said" opportunities. Who knew 4-wheeling could be so dirty? hahaha!
By the end of the night I had feared perhaps I intimidated this great new friend with my personality "overload". But I was told, "Don't worry about it... I actually expected the unexpected. And per my expectations, this was NOTHING like I have ever experienced before. You are definitely the most unusual girl I have ever met." "In a good way?" "Yes...in a good way."
Me? NOT so usual? Yeah... It's how I roll baby!

Something You May Not Know
When I was a kid, I didn't like my name. I actually had a hard time with my name until I was an adult -- just a few years ago.
Why didn't I like it? Because my name was "Different". Do you know how many times I wished I were an Amy or a Jennifer? Why couldn't I be a Heather or a Kelly? Perhaps an Angie or a Julie? In any grade of any year during my elementary school years these were common names in multiples. In fact, in my afternoon Kindergarten class at Concord Oxbow there were 3 Kelly's. Yep, Kelly Row, Kelly Webster and Kelly Koolidgeschmidt. During High School my group of friends had 3 Julies. There were so many common names, but not one person I knew was named Emma. Or at least not in my "decade."
My great Aunt's name was Emma. But, she was "old". I had heard of an actress named Emma Thompson, but she wasn't in any of the kid's movies I'd seen. I remember when adults would ask me my name and I'd say "Emma", the most common response I'd ever get was "My grandmother's name was Emma!" Great, I used to think. I have an old lady's name.
When I was around age 14 a lady at church was pregnant, and told me that she and her husband considered the name Emma for their baby. But then they opted for Emily. I remember thinking, WHY would they choose EMMA? When I was a senior in High School Kindergarten Cop came out. There was a little girl character named Emma. I thought, "Wha-???" But that movie must have been the catalyst to bring that name back. Because that year, it seemed like babies were being named Emma left and right. Even my cousin named their baby Emma.
For nearly 20 years the name Emma has been near the tops of the popular baby name list. I remember when I was 19 and pregnant, someone asked me if I had a girl if I would name her Emma. Immediately I said, "no", and then someone close to me said, "Good. I don't really like that name." Even though I was embarrassed by my name, it really hurt to have this person say this to me. But, I continued to feel that my name must not be a good name.
But then, a few years ago, I had a close friend tell me all the time how much he loved my name. And Big-D would tell me that he liked my name too. This actually made me feel quite a bit better about my name. And during the course of the last 2 1/2 years (since being divorced) I have realized that I actually *do* like my name.
It's true, it might be a "different" name for people of MY generation. But let's face it, I am different from others of MY generation. And I don't just like my name because it's "in" all of a sudden. I think I grew to like it, because I grew to finally like me... love me, actually.
There has been a lot of trials and challenges and moments of discovery and clarity about who I am. To reflect upon the things I have endured is actually quite empowering. To ponder the discoveries I have found about myself is quite exciting. To finally feel like "me" in my own skin is quite refreshing. And to finally love my name is...fulfilling.
And I do love my name now, because I love me. If I were having a baby girl and someone asked me today if I'd give her my name...I just might say "yes"... at least for a middle name.
Oh - and just don't call me "Em" without prior written authorization :) That nickname is only reserved for certain men I am endeared towards... and a very few close friends :)

Is It Just Me, or What?
Sometimes the best thing you can do is laugh at yourself. I wish I would have learned that in my younger days. Over the last few years especially, I have learned not to take myself so seriously all the time, not to worry about what others think about me (or at least not like I used to), and that laughter really can be the best medicine. What's that movie quote?? "If you can't laugh at yourself, life's gonna be a whole lot longer than you like." Besides, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
I've taken the color personality test before. But recently I took it again for kicks and giggles. Most everyone has a primary and secondary "color code". My primary is yellow, and here is the gist of what that means....
"Yellows are motivated by FUN. You are instinctively happy and gravitate to people and situations that provide carefree adventure and playful interactions. Even under the most serious of circumstances or daunting tasks, you and your YELLOW (buddies/girlfriends), will seek an element of personal fulfillment and spontaneous enjoyment in the experience. Spontaneous play and genuine "in the moment" FUN are not merely important to you - they are as essential to your very being as eating....
you are inviting and embrace life as a party that you're hosting. You love playful interaction and can be extremely sociable. YELLOWS need to be adored and praised, especially by their partners. While you are carefree, you are quite sensitive and highly alert to others' agendas to control you. You carry within yourself the gift of a good heart, and are happy to share it with your significant other...
You are happy, articulate, engaging of others and crave adventure. Easily distracted, you can never sit still for long. You embrace each day in the "present tense" and choose people to be around who, like you, enjoy a curious nature.
You are not a boring person. In fact, you are often the life of the party wherever you go and whatever you do. You always have something to talk about, and you are constantly getting yourself into unbelievably funny situations. Potential partners love this about you because they know that there will never be a dull moment and that they will never have to worry about a lack of entertainment.
One of the greatest gifts that you have to offer is that you have an amazing heart. You tend to reserve it for those by whom you feel adored, but you give it so freely when you find that special someone. Not only do you have a great heart, but you are able to create romantic moments and memories. You are easy to fall in love with just as you love easily and openly. Your partner will know that you would do anything for them, which is very endearing."
So, yes... I'd have to say that about sums me up! lol... well there's more. But like I said, that is the gist of it. Anyway, as I find myself in "unbelievably funny situations", I wonder, "Is it just me?" or "Why do things like this always happen to me?" or "Do my yellow spidey senses make me more prone to stuff like this???
Case(s) in Point (just this past week-week and a half):
#1) Recently, I was sitting in the library doing homework. The guy at the table directly to my left bent over to get something from his bag. Total plumber's crack. So, then I sort of shift my chair to the right a little and that guy didn't even NEED to be bending over for me to glimpse his coin slot! So, in an effort to regain any ability to focus, I just faced my chair straight ahead. And I am 100% dead serious when I say that right before my eyes, Comb-Over-Man BENT OVER and was totally wreaking Crack-Havoc! So, then what did I do? I logged on to Facebook of course, to post that "Crack" was the free feature in the library that night and a warning to kids everywhere to say "no" to "crack"... **sigh** I totally crack myself up over how clever I am :p
#2) A few weeks ago, I headed to the library to take a test for school. When I got to the parking lot, I realized that my shirt was on INSIDE OUT! And it was waaaaay obvious. After much debate on whether or not to jaunt across the parking lot and dodge in the ladies room before being apprehended by the fashion police, I pulled my van into a far corner of the lot and quickly fixed my shirt.
#3) Recently, I was getting ready to go somewhere, but needed to put a new coat of polish on my nails. I figured I'd drive real carefully so as not to mess them up. Problem was, as soon as I got outside, I realized my keys were in the front pocket of my jeans. I had to ask my neighbor to fish them out for me.
#4) While at the library a second time this week, I realized - once I got there of course - my PANTS were INSIDE OUT! Doh! Who DOES that? (tee hee... me, i guess)
#5) Friday, I was shopping for school clothes for the kids. And when I shop, I don't mess around. So, there I was, walking briskly through Tar-Jay, when somehow, all of a sudden, my purse grabs hold of a clothing rack and, well -- "Nothin' to see here folks...move along... just a semi- crazy lady picking up the rack of clothes she just knocked over."
and Finally...
#6) Saturday night, I get in the van to go down to meet a friend in American Fork. I notice a total string of bird poo all down my window. Bleh. I know it's harmless since it's on the outside. However I also know myself well enough to know that it will distract me! So, I make a quick play for the car wash. I put my window down, pay the guys, and then ...uh, oh. Power window will not come back up. Uh-oh... line is forming behind me. Usually, if it "sticks", I just wait about 10 seconds and then it just fine. But, not this time. The guys had to have the ENTIRE LINE of cars BACK.UP. so I could get out of the car-wash "track". Then, I drove around to the back of the line! Luckily by the time I got up to the front again, the window had gone up. The guys were just sort of shaking their heads, laughing.
And that is just a SAMPLING of my life over the course of about 10 days! lol! In the words of Kaye Kaye... I know y'all are jealous and want to be me :)
So again, I wonder.... is it just me? Is my personality somehow a catalyst for these types of situations? Or is it like my one friend says, that while "things like this may happen to others, they are not able to laugh at themselves and put a humorous spin on it."
Who knows? But I will say this about me and my big, bad yellowness...
I AM happy (even in all my dorky-glory). I DO enjoy my "adventures". I CAN laugh at myself and I WILL always invite others to laugh along too!
For more about the color code personality test, go {here}.
Confessions of a Talk-a-holic
1) I am NOT a show-off. I mean, I enjoy nice things (not that I can afford to buy anything nice as of late), but if/when I acquire something, it is not in my nature to go around showing it off. I *might* share my excitement about it with perhaps a few close friends, however.
3) I am NOT good at taking a compliment. That sort of attention makes me a tad uncomfortable. Part of me feels like if I say "thanks", I am somehow being conceited... or at least not humble. Logically, I realize there is a difference. I am working on it, and I am much better now than I used to be.
Okay... all of THAT being said, I will admit to THIS:
2) It's NOT only about me. In other words, I can have conversations about funny things that happened to me, or things I overheard, etc... but I don't seek out to tell others all about me. (or at least, I try not to.) And in a relationship, I am more of a "people pleaser". I like to do things for the other person, like cook or help them clean, etc. And when it comes to things like TV, I often forsake my preferences to watch what the other person wants. Things like that...

I ENJOY ATTENTION.
There, I said it. Whew! I mean, I am a writer at heart, and would blog even if I had 0 followers and 0 comments. Though, I admit that I prefer comments and followers. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, "I am a bloggy comment whore!" Additionally, I admit that I sort of like making slight ruckuses on FB. Many times I update my status bar with things that are slightly ambiguous, such as "just found a bruise in a very odd place", because I KNOW it will invoke curiosity. I am sort of an exhibitionist in that respect.
I don't know how to explain it except that in many places where you're supposed to behave a certain way (at church, the grocery store, an office, his parent's house, etc.) I often have this insatiable urge to act another way. I think it's the thrill that I *might* get caught.
I am not a thrill-seeker when my life may be at stake (sky-diving, etc.)... but, I *do* like attention.
What about you? Anything YOU'D like to confess??? ;)

ABC's of Me
[A]ttention is something I enjoy,
[B]ourne Movies are my all-time fave.
There's no such thing as too much [C]heese;
[D]ollar and cents, I'm trying to save.
I'm [E]agerly searching for Mr. Right to forever be my lover.
Bare [F]eet gross me out; So keep 'em Cute, Clean or Covered!
Hawaii is where I went to colle[G]e,
But I'm a [H]oosier, 'cause that's where I was born.
My [I]pod's full of tons of tunes,
[J]uxtaposing love and scorn.
Amish is my daddy's bac[K]ground,
[L]DS is my religion.
[M]assages are like Crack-Cocaine,
and I love snuggli[N]g (just a smidgen).
H[O]bbies & adventures keep me busy.
I've [P]layed the piano since I was four
Which helps to [Q]uiet many thoughts
'cause insomnia's a bo[R]e!
[S]ushi rocks! Need I say more? ("Connect" and "Las Vegas" rolls, to-die for!)
"[T]hat's what she said" is my favorite line, (though it gets me into trouble).
[U]tah is where I live now (What some call the "Mormon bubble").
Con[V]ersating is my obsession,
[W]riting is my passion,
To e[X]cel is my drive, being myself in true fashion.
One stop short of Insanit[Y]ville, some onlookers just might decide.
But with [Z]eal, I continue, for I've nothing more to hide.

Who Am I?
Ok, so one of my classes is an Interpersonal Communications course. One of the principles of communications is that "all your communication starts or ends with you." You code or encode things you reveal or receive/interpret through your own frame of reference. Anyway, to understand the role you play in your own communication, it helps to do a little self-discovery. Here was the assignment:
____________________
Consider this question: Who are you? More specifically, ask yourself this question TEN TIMES. Write your responses... It may be challenging to identify ten aspects of yourself. The Spanish writer Cervantes said, "To know thyself...is the most difficult lesson in the world." ("Interpersonal Communication, Relating to Others,5th edition", Beebe, 34)
I Am...a daughter of God
I Am...curious.
I Am...talkative.
I Am...creative, I do things OUTSIDE the box.
I Am...kind & giving.
I Am...no respecter of persons.
I Am...positive (usually).
I Am...enthusiastic & playful
I Am...devoted, committed, loyal.
I Am...loving.
______________
Ok... I admit, this was sort of hard at first. But then, once I got going, it was like the flood gates opened, and as I neared 10, all of a sudden I could think of ten more, and then ten more on top of that! But, I wanted to limit it to the assignment and stick to ten. Try it... see how you do.
