Happy Mother's Day

Sheri L Dew is a powerful woman. Powerful not only as an author, but she is also CEO of Deseret Book and former White House Delegate for the United Nations. She has never been married; never had children. And yet, she recognizes that in women God instills a special gift of Motherhood.

In a conference she spoke about women and motherhood and said, "Like Eve, our motherhood began before we were born. ...Motherhood is more than bearing children, though it is certainly that. It is the essence of who we are as women. It defines our very identity, our divine stature and nature, and the unique traits our Father gave us."

In trying to determine for herself how she could reap the blessings of motherhood when she is not married she finally came to this conclusion: "For reasons known to the Lord, some women are required to wait to have children. This delay is not easy for righteous women. But the Lord's timetable for each of us does nor negate our nature. Some of us, then, must simply find other ways to mother. And all around us are those who need to be loved and led."

I know that in my own life I was not only fortunate to have my mother, but I have had lots of other "surrogates" along the way. I think about the other "mothers" who have helped watch over me when I was over at a friend's house for the weekend or at Girls' Camp in the summer, or the dorm "mom" when I went to college. During my first Christmas away from home my roommate's family took me in and her mom treated me like one of her own. Even after I got married and pregnant and was living across an ocean from my mom, my Boss's wife was a huge blessing to me as "mother". And now, living in another state, there are good women to "mother" me.

To all of you mothers out there, and to all of my "other mothers" and of course MY mom, Happy Mother's Day!

A few pictures of the generations of moms.... :)

I'm glad she was a little naughty so that we'd have this memento of her.
