Word!

All right, if you've ever ventured outside of your state, or to another country perhaps, you may have noticed how you can all be speaking English, and yet the words or meanings are different.

Let's take the carbonated beverage as an example. I grew up in Northern Indiana. We call it "pop". The waitress might ask what sort of pop you would like to drink. When I was in Tennessee, I noticed my one aunt used to always say "Soda pop". My friend from Massachusetts says "Coke" even if she is talking "Pepsi" or "Sprite". It really threw me off when she once said, "I am sooooo thirsty, I need a coke" and then she bought a root beer. And she would ask the waiter, "What kind of cokes do you guys have?" when she wanted to know what sort of carbonated beverage they had. When I went to school in Hawaii, and also living here in Utah, we say "soda".

That being said, Please leave a comment and tell me what words/phrases/variations you use for the following?

1) Bucket or Pail?

2) Soda, Pop, Soda Pop, or other?

3) Trash, Garbage, Rubbish or other?

4) For your midday meal do you call it Lunch or Dinner?

5) For your evening meal do you call it Dinner or Supper? Or maybe it's supper at home but dinner when you go out to eat?

6) Cellar or Basement?

7) Did you see her "spank" or "paddle" her kids?

8) Swimming Suit or Bathing Suit?

9) Night Gown, Night Dress, or Bed Gown?

10) PJ's , Pajamas, Jammies, Jammas?

11) That thing with wheels you put groceries in... Cart? Buggy? Carriage? Basket? or other?

12) those rubber-like sandal-type thingy's you wear to the beach... Flip Flops, Thongs, Slippers or something else?

13) Underpants, underwear, whiteys, whitey-tidies, BVD's, thongs, panties or something else?

14) Freeway, Parkway, Interstate, or other?

15) "Band-Aid" or adhesive bandage?

16) "Kool-Aid" or Sweetened Flavor drink mix?

17) Holiday, vacation, "mini-vay"

18) What about when you wanna ask someone how they have been lately?

Wuzzup/What's up?

How Goes it?

What Goes On?

or other...

Well, that is about all the excitement I can handle for one night. What else can you think of? Please add your responses on these and whatever you can remember... thanks!

1) Bucket

2) Pop! (actually I say "soda" more often than not, but that's just because I want to be understood, not because I like it!)

3) Trash (Though here in NC I think they say "garbage" because that's what all the kiddies at camp have been saying...that's news to me)

4) Lunch AND dinner - lunch to others, dinner to family!

5) Dinner AND Supper - dinner to others, supper to family!

6) Those are two different things where I come from. Cellar is just for storage kind of things and is accessed from the outside and a basement is for whatever and is accessed from inside.

7) Spank...unless it's with a paddle!

8) Swimming Suit...because you're swimming, not bathing!

9) Night Gown...though I don't wear them

10) PJ's , Pajamas, Jammies - whichever of these 3

11) Cart

12) Flip flops

13) Underwear - the word "panties" makes me cringe!

14) Freeway, highway, or interstate

15) Band-Aid

16) Kool-Aid

17) Holiday is a special day, vacation is a trip

18) How're ya doing? (at least that's how I say it, not necessarily how I'd spell it)

18) Toooo many answers to this one. What's up? How YOU doin? (Joey from friends), How's it goin?... how are ya?
19) I sit on a couch. Not a sofa or chesterfield.
20) I change diapers, not nappies.
21) my kids sucked on a soother. not a pacifier, Nuk, binkie, etc.
22) outhouse, not a latrine or loo
23) I find an ATM, not a cash machine

p.s. that was fun.

but I'm still confused. People REALLY do call lunch dinner? where do these people live? I don't venture far from Az so...WHO KNEW?!

EmmaP said...

ok.. Here is what I say:

1)Bucket
2)Soda. I grew up saying "pop", but when I moved to Hawaii, it was "soda"
3)I grew up with Gar-Bahjz... hehehe. in Hawaii we said "rubbish". Now I say Trash or garbage. Mostly Trash... I think.
4)I always said lunch, but grandma and the other "country folk" said "dinner".
5)I say dinner, though I grew up saying supper. When I hear someone here in UT say "supper", it reminds me of my parents.
6) basement
7) spank. i don't know why, but I hate the word "paddle", unless referring to an object.
8) swim suit.
9)night gown or nightie
10)i grew up saying "pj's" but now I say "jammies".
11)i have always said cart. though in hawaii a lot of people said "buggy". but where i grew up a buggy is what the amish drive.
12)when i was little we calledn them "thongs". when i lived in hawaii we called them slippers. i have been calling them slippers for over 15 years. but now i am starting to call them flip flops, since that is what all of my kids and friends call them.
13) underpants when my boys were little. now i just say underwear.
14) freeway
15)band-aid, even if it's "curad" brand
16)i say kool-aid for any brand flavored drink mix
17)vacation
18)i always say, "hi. how's it goin?"

some more:
19)I always said "pacifier", never "binky".

20)I hated that my mom said "bottom" and "butt" just sounds too crude. So i say "bum" or "bum-bum" for the little kids.

21) My mom "sweeps" her rug with a vacuum while I vacuum it.

22) I "babysit" kids while everyone here in Utah says, "tend kids". that is still a weird one for me.

23) i sat "parents" while my parents say "folks". whn I hear "folks", however, it reminds me of my parents... tee hee.

Hahaha!! That's so funny. My friend from Texas also calls "pop" "coke". When she moved her (for like 6 months) I told her that if she wanted something other than a coke, she was going to have to specify or else she was going to get a coke. LOL

2) Soda, Pop, Soda Pop, or other? Pop

3) Trash, Garbage, Rubbish or other? Garbage

4) For your midday meal do you call it Lunch or Dinner? Lunch

5) For your evening meal do you call it Dinner or Supper? Or maybe it's supper at home but dinner when you go out to eat? Dinner always

6) Cellar or Basement? Basement

7) Did you see her "spank" or "paddle" her kids? Spank

8) Swimming Suit or Bathing Suit? Both, but mostly swimming.

9) Night Gown, Night Dress, or Bed Gown? night gown.

10) PJ's , Pajamas, Jammies, Jammas? PJ's / Pajamas

11) That thing with wheels you put groceries in... Cart? Buggy? Carriage? Basket? or other? Cart

12) those rubber-like sandal-type thingy's you wear to the beach... Flip Flops, Thongs, Slippers or something else? Flip Flops

I was born and raised in the South by one Yankee and one Canadian. My venacular is peppered, even at my age, with thing that are not proper to say here...like your "pop" which is what I say while all the other Southerners will say "soda" or the even more popular "coke" (little "c" not the big C for Coke-a-cola).

I also say "you betcha"

1) Bucket

2) Pop

3) Garbage is for indoor things...trash is for things that are blown in off the road and into the grass.

4) Lunch...seriously? Do people really call lunch "dinner"?

5) Supper is the evening meal for non-special meals. Dinner is used for special evening meals or holiday lunches (like Thanksgiving Dinner). Going out to eat is called going out to eat, LOL.

6) Basement

7) I say spank...but my mother and her Canadian self always used the word paddle. I haven't thought of that for years!

8) Bathing Suit. My family says Swim suit...that must be a northern thing that I didn't pick up?

9) Night Gown

10) PJ's and/or Jammies. I only used the word Pajamas when it was a direct order to get ready for bed that needed repeating.

11) Grocery Cart

12) Flip Flops...this one made me laugh

13) underwear

14) Interstate or Highway

15) "Band-Aid"

16) "Kool-Aid" LOL...it's also called "Grape Drink" here in the poor white-ghetto-south.

17) Vacation

18) How have you been?
