Sugar & Spice & Everything Nice...

In my interpersonal communications class they talk about self discovery and "self communication". One principal of self-communication is INTRApersonal communication, wherein one thinks about the very thoughts they are thinking about at that very moment they are thinking them. (whereas some people really don't think about their thoughts) Anyway, it really made me think!

I felt like they were describing me! Lol!

So here I am, thinking about my thoughts, which are that we have some really great words in the English language and its a shame I don't take advantage of them more. Sort of like cooking only with salt & pepper. I like a little bit more "flavor" and "spice". So then I started thinking of myriads of words I really love and would/should use more often... Myriad being one of them.

I don't know why, but words get me excited like cooking with spices does. I was ecstatic to use the word "penitential" the other day in describing my Sunday post. I mean, how often does *that* word come up, right? Then immediately, I thought of a few others...

Juxtapose

Commingling

Auspicious

Insidious

Incredulous

Ambiguous

Equivocal

Antiquate

I began to make a list- in my blackberry of course - of "words to use more often". Lame, I know.

I mean on the one hand I should want to keep things simple. I would never want come off as a wiseacre or anything. Like I really HATE when people use BIG WORDS just to show off or try to ACT like they are super educated or superior, and talk over everyone else's head.

But on the other hand, I am so drawn to words I find myself wanting to know more; to learn more. Of course the ultimate desire is then to put these words to use, apply it to practicum.

Perhaps I shall just make use of these words in moderation as not to overwhelm anyone, hehehe.

What about you? Are there words you just LOVE to use? Or wish you had the opportunity to use more?

Word!

All right, if you've ever ventured outside of your state, or to another country perhaps, you may have noticed how you can all be speaking English, and yet the words or meanings are different.

Let's take the carbonated beverage as an example. I grew up in Northern Indiana. We call it "pop". The waitress might ask what sort of pop you would like to drink. When I was in Tennessee, I noticed my one aunt used to always say "Soda pop". My friend from Massachusetts says "Coke" even if she is talking "Pepsi" or "Sprite". It really threw me off when she once said, "I am sooooo thirsty, I need a coke" and then she bought a root beer. And she would ask the waiter, "What kind of cokes do you guys have?" when she wanted to know what sort of carbonated beverage they had. When I went to school in Hawaii, and also living here in Utah, we say "soda".

That being said, Please leave a comment and tell me what words/phrases/variations you use for the following?

1) Bucket or Pail?

2) Soda, Pop, Soda Pop, or other?

3) Trash, Garbage, Rubbish or other?

4) For your midday meal do you call it Lunch or Dinner?

5) For your evening meal do you call it Dinner or Supper? Or maybe it's supper at home but dinner when you go out to eat?

6) Cellar or Basement?

7) Did you see her "spank" or "paddle" her kids?

8) Swimming Suit or Bathing Suit?

9) Night Gown, Night Dress, or Bed Gown?

10) PJ's , Pajamas, Jammies, Jammas?

11) That thing with wheels you put groceries in... Cart? Buggy? Carriage? Basket? or other?

12) those rubber-like sandal-type thingy's you wear to the beach... Flip Flops, Thongs, Slippers or something else?

13) Underpants, underwear, whiteys, whitey-tidies, BVD's, thongs, panties or something else?

14) Freeway, Parkway, Interstate, or other?

15) "Band-Aid" or adhesive bandage?

16) "Kool-Aid" or Sweetened Flavor drink mix?

17) Holiday, vacation, "mini-vay"

18) What about when you wanna ask someone how they have been lately?

Wuzzup/What's up?

How Goes it?

What Goes On?

or other...

Well, that is about all the excitement I can handle for one night. What else can you think of? Please add your responses on these and whatever you can remember... thanks!

Your Writing Assignment

A few weekends ago when I was out with friends, one of them teased me about why I always use "big" words...and how I even know "big" words.

I replied, "I didn't know I used big words. I don't mean to use big words. What words???"

I am definitely not one that tries to use big words to impress everyone else. And as far as blogging goes, I pretty much blog like I speak. Therefore I know that my grammar here is far from perfect. Additionally, I tend to have a few favorite "short-cut" words, i.e., Cuz, Fav, Gonna, Lemme, Dunno... Definitely not a pure grammarian here.

However, I do like words. If there is a word I hear and don't know the meaning, I like to look it up. My mother enoys words. I suppose she used not-so-everyday words in her everyday conversation with us. I.e., "It would behoove you to clean your rooms before the weekend" or "Your father and I aren't fighting. We just grouse at each other sometimes." Thus, words that I thought were normal in everyday vocabulary apparently aren't. I used the word grouse once at work and my coworker laughed at me and said, "What? Who says 'grouse'?" I was like... "awwww. I do." :(

I remember in my creative writing class, Monday was "Word Day". The professor would write five words on the board. We had to select one of the words, learn it's definition and incoporate it into our author's journal that particular day.

One word I remember learning in that class was "bovine" which basically means "cowlike" or "pertaining to a cow". I remember that word specifically because I wanted to write how the professor had a bovine walk. It was true. She did. I could just picture a tail swishing from behind too. And when she smiled...ooh [shudders]...Let's just say the name "Bessie" came to mind. Nevertheless, I abstained and instead wrote about someone having bovine eyes.

So for today, I thought it would be fun to do a little writing assignment of my own. (I know - you might not find this as "fun" as I do...it's ok.) If you want to participate, simply choose a word from the list and incorporate it into your comment on my blog. Ooh! And BONUS points if someone can use ALL of the words in one sentence! And if you DON'T want to participate, you can instead just comment on how awesome you think I am, or something like that, tee hee.

Okay, here goes... (click word for definition)

precipice
fetter
pique
scrupulous
plebian (as you know...one of my favorite words, "pleb" for short.)

My entry: Reading your blog has certainly piqued my curiosity with regards to who you really are.
