The Proposal

I have a friend named Brent who lives in New Zealand. We keep in contact via email. He is madly in love with Abigail. He asked me my opinion on how he should propose. Here was my reply...

As far as the ring goes, I am afraid I am not much help. My ex never proposed to me. We had talked about getting married and then a few days later while at the mall, after looking at several rings, he told me to wait at the food court. Then he came out of the jewelers, handed me a bag and said, "Here you go; your ring's in the bag. I'm going to get some Korean BBQ." So, I would say ANYTHING you do would have to be better than that.

Anyway, that got me wondering... So, let's hear it... Tell us how YOU proposed or got proposed to. Or share a cool proposal ditty you heard about someone else. After all, it HAS to be better than MY story, right???

Argh!! My ex did not propose to me either! I really do not have any thing grand to suggest because even the simpliest effort given to me will be very much appreciated. How about saying, 'wait here, i'll go buy some barbeque' [off he goes, buying the ring first, then attaching the ring to the barbeque stick]! Lame? Oh, i'd appreciate that..

On one particular date I had a feeling that This Night would be a Special Night. I called off work because something said I should just Wait It Out. So we were putting a puzzle together and making small talk when Finally he asked me to marry him. I said yes. And the rest is history. No ring because he was raised Amish and they do not wear rings.
When his time was up to serve in the hospital he was getting ready to go back home to live. We had not set a date for the wedding so I asked him if he was going to marry me or what. He said he wanted to very much and so we set a date to elope. My aunt made my dress in 2 weeks, I gave my 2 weeks notice to work, we found an apartment for me to stay in closer to his home town, we did the blood tests and paperwork thing, we found a majestrate, and he bought me a 9 dollar ring. Then we eloped and have been married for 37 years. My 9 dollar ring has been replaced a couple of times. I still have it though sitting in my jewelry box. Ah, the memories

My husband made me a dinner with candle light and got down on his knees took my hand and ask if I would marry him! Than he gave me a promise ring (after I said yes of course!) And we went together to pick out the ring!

We came home from dinner. He got down on one knee and popped the question. I had waited 31 years to hear those words and by golly, that ring was going on my finger. And it did...getting it off was another story. When my finger started turning purple, we decided that it would be wise to go to the emergency room. Yep...we got it cut off. Luckily, the jeweler replaced it but he was mortified.

So, the moral of the story is, make sure you have her correct ring size because she will want that ring on her finger. If you don't know it exactly...believe me...bigger is better.

Mine was pretty good. He knew he had a deadline--what I would do if he did not do it, I have no idea. But on our anniversary weekend, we took a trip--we had champagne in Forest Park in St Louis, and that is where he did it. We had a quilt on the ground, strawberries and champagne, etc.

I was giving up, and getting ready to leave when he flung the ring box out at me.

It was swell

We went to the memorial building and watched the film and then he took me to one of the highest floors with a nice view and gave me one reason he loved me with each of a dozen roses and then got down on one knee and popped the question along with the ring.
Thanks again for helping him out with getting the roses set up and such. Also thanks ruthykins for helping him pick out the ring.

Big A was working in Wyoming for the Forest Service & we were young and madly in love (ha) so I went to visit him over 4th of July weekend. He took me to Jackson Hole & then we went to Yellowstone.
We watched Old Faithful go off and walked around the paint pots and stuff. I actually almost ruined it at OF because he had the box in his pocket and I put my arm around his wait and hit it; I said, "what's that?" and he told me it was his wallet (good enough for me).
Then we drove around, stopping once in awhile to look at cool stuff. Finally he took me to Lower Falls which is the gorgeous waterfall. 300some feet high. As we walked to the overlook, we passed a bunch of people coming down. And so when we got there, we were alone. I took a bunch of pictures and then he came over and wrapped me up in this big hug. He said "I can't believe we've been together 9 months." And in my head that sounded SHORT so I added "almost 10." And then I closed my eyes against his chest and he said, "I think this is what God wants" (or something like that). He pulled away and dropped to one knee. I opened my eyes and he opened the box...and the ring(s) (wedding and engagement set) fell out. They rolled toward the edge of the overlook but he grabbed them in time. That would have been BAD! And then he asked me to marry him. I think he cried WAY more than me (he's so sweet) but I blinked out my tears and nodded and said yes. And then we hugged and I got my ring. And about that same time, a lady (I think she was French by her accent) came down and we asked her to take a picture of us. It was the perfect day!

He came to my apartment all dressed up. Said he needed to talk to me, so we went to my room for privacy. He handed me his notebook. In it, he had written a crossword puzzle and the answers were the proposal.

I came home to my apartment and found rose petals everywhere! On the floor, the table, the cofee table. I went into the living room and Dan was there with candles lit wearing his tuxedo from high school (a little snug but cute none the less). He got down on one knee and gave me 2 dozen roses and a ring (we bought it at a pawn shop for $150). Then he asked me to marry him. I was totally not expecting it because it was a Tuesday night and we only saw each other on the weekends because we were both in school full time and working and lived an hour away from each other. It was awesome.

My husband was visiting from another state. We visiting a Christian bookshop and he saw me seriously wanting 3 books, but I couldn't afford them and wouldn't let him buy them. After he dropped me off at work that afternoon, he went back and bought them, along with a bookmark that had Proverbs 31 on it. He wrote "Will you marry me?" on the back of the bookmark, tied the ring to it, and left it in one of the books on my bed for me to find Sunday morning. (He left it there while I was in the bathroom getting ready.) At first I just saw the books and went to thank him. He told me to take a look inside the books, and that's when I found the bookmark and ring. Of course I said yes!

Mine hid my ring in a rose.. then made me pick all the petals off to find it.. I had no clue.. of course he had a camcorder on me and his parents sitting there.. I was nervous. Everyone here can tell me if they think its romantic or not to have future inlaws sitting there watching the whole ordeal! LOL

It was our 2 year anniversary of dating, and Billy told me he would take me to Dairy Queen for my favorite treat, a Nerd Blizzard. We went back to my house and sat out on the back porch. We were just eating our blizzards when he pulled out the box and proposed! The bad thing about this is Dairy Queen DOESN'T MAKE nerd blizzards anymore!! JERKS!!

well, derek decided that if he did it in public he would have good chance that i would say yes. i was in charge of this talent show at church and derek was the last "act". he proposed to me on stage and his family was all there. i guess everyone knew what was going on but me. as soon as he called me up to the stage the audience started clapping, but i thought he was just playing a trick. then he had a box, which i was sure was empty. then there was a ring in the box, but i thought it was a fake. then he asked me to marry him and i said "are you for real?" obviously, i said yes and the crowd cheered.

I think it was something like "Don't you think we should get married?" Yes, I know, he's such a romantic!

With us the question was asked and answered in conversation several times, but when I actually got the ring in was the Thursday before school started. I was starting my senior year of high school and he was moving an hour away to start his freshman year of college. He took me to the park a while before dusk. We walked around and fed the ducks for a while, then he sat me by a tree and had me wait while he got something from the car. He brought everything back, and leaned up against a tree and I sat in front of him and leaned against him. He gave me sparkling cider to dring out of fancy stemmed glasses and then asked me to marry him again and slipped the ring on my finger. It sounds kinda cheesy sometimes, but I was only 17 and it was the most romantic thing ever.

Ohhh, sad! =(

I just reposted my engagement story this week, since it was the 8th anniversary of when it happened and we were in the location that it happened. It was on the beach at sunset. =)

(and my MIL took pics of our "reinactment" this week...can't wait to post them!)

I knew it was forever when we were on my bed in my college apartment at like 2 in the morning when he asked me what I thought about him taking me to the Temple. Lots of "should not do's in there such as bed - 2am) He said he was just getting a feel on how I felt and it came out that way. He wanted to propose in a completely romantic way. So I always tease him that he didn't really plan to ask me but he couldn't back peddle fast enough.

You think Korean BBQ isn't a romantic start? Trav and I were fighting over the telephone (he was in Idaho and I was in Utah) when he yelled at me (the ONLY time EVER) and told me we were getting married, hang up the **** phone and go tell my mom. I answered with a shouted **** YOU! Now, that is romance ;) Who knew the F bomb proposal would work out so well?
